Main use: Automated, off-grid drainage system for removing excess water from low-lying areas of an almond orchard and recycling it back to the main dam, ensuring optimal soil conditions for almond trees.
Customer: Almond Farm in Northern Victoria
Location: Northern Victoria
In the sun-drenched landscapes of Northern Victoria, where almond orchards stretch as far as the eye can see, effective water management is crucial for crop health and productivity. An almond farm faced the challenge of efficiently draining low-lying areas while conserving water resources. This case study explores how Davey Water Products, in partnership with Nutrien Water Mildura, provided an innovative off-grid drainage solution that keeps almond trees’ feet dry and recycles precious water.

The Challenge:
The almond farm required a drainage system that could:
- Efficiently remove excess water from low- lying areas across the property
- Operate independently of mains power due to limited electrical infrastructure
- Automatically activate when needed without constant monitoring
- Return drained water to the main dam for recycling and conservation
- Provide reliable performance in varying weather conditions
Our Solution
Aaron Newson from Nutrien Water Mildura, working closely with the drainage contractor, recommended a comprehensive solution using Davey products:
- 10 x Davey 5270YE/HPAUTO Firefighter pumps
- Each pump was equipped with a automatic controller for start/stop functionality
- With float switches to activate the pump controllers – in the strategically placed drainage pits across the site
This solution was chosen for its:
- High performance and reliability, crucial for agricultural applications
- Off-grid capability, addressing the limited power supply on the property
- Automatic operation, reducing the need for constant monitoring
- Durability to withstand outdoor agricultural conditions
- Ability to efficiently move water from drainage pits back to the main dam
Results
The installation of the Davey drainage system resulted in:
- Effective water removal from low-lying areas, preventing waterlogging of almond trees
- Automated drainage management, reducing labor and monitoring requirements
- Successful water recycling, supporting sustainable farming practices
- A reliable, off-grid solution that operates independently of mains power
“For this project, our client required reliability and flexibility. We selected a quality, Australian manufactured firefighting pump from Davey which met their needs and offered back up support for Nutrien Water and our Client.” says Aaron Newson, Nutrien Water Mildura.
