Gary Furlong of Furlong’s Pumps & Sprayers in Ayr, QLD is a man who likes to keep his finger on the pulse. Even at 79 he still visits the store every day.
For almost 15 years Gary had been managing a local farm supply business but just couldn’t see a future there for himself and his family, so decided to go out on his own opening a pumping and irrigation business. From humble beginnings, Gary knew he could utilise the great relationships and contacts he had made in the region in his previous role. So, on July 1st, 1979, Gary Furlong Agencies opened for business. With the support of his wife Valma, he started travelling around the region in a leased ute, visiting local farms and selling irrigation pumps from a once used service station, rent free on Brandon Rd, Ayr. Today it’s a real family affair with both of Gary’s sons having 30 plus years in the family business. Gary’s eldest son Greg specialises in installation and planning of large pumps and pipelines for the local farming district, and his other son Russell specialises in irrigation system design for residential and sporting projects. Their vast knowledge of all aspects of running the family business provides is the backbone of the customer service they which they are proudly known for. All up they have nine staff working on servicing, installation and fabrication of pumping systems along with admin and stores roles. Staff numbers are not the only thing that’s expanded since the early days according to Gary. "We are now located in a big shed on half an acre, smack in the middle of town, and we have two big warehouses across the road where we do fabrication work,” says Gary. They Ayr region is famous for its sugar cane with four mills producing more than nine million tonnes of sugar a year. “Our core business is pumps and irrigation and we do a lot of work on large bore pumps. Our biggest install would be a 10-inch diameter centrifugal Davey pump.” In the early days Furlong’s stocked another brand of pump but it wasn’t long before they moved to Davey. “They have a good name and are a good company. We have had great relationships with management and reps right back to the days of John Vincent,” says Gary.
When the family takes time out it’s to the local fishing spot at Groper Creek where both Greg and Russell are keen fisherman. Gary on the other hand use to play a lot of golf and these days his involvement is more around supporting the local club through various sponsorship opportunities.
