When Henry and Tony Wiatkowski first set up a shop for their Davey retail business in Coonamble, NSW they never even used to open the front door.
Henry and Tony were working mainly on electrical and refrigeration projects, but they were selling a bit of Davey product and needed somewhere to put it. They bought out Tony’s father-in-law’s mixed business and set up there, but customers used to come to the back door. “The business was growing a bit and people don’t like you working out of a shed, so we set up at the shop. People would come round the back to drop off pumps for repair, then they started coming in because they needed fittings and soon people were calling in to buy products. One day our accountant was working and people kept coming around, and he said ‘why don’t we just throw open the front doors?. A year later we were a Davey Master Dealer,” Henry says. While the business is based in Coonamble, it services a big area. Just recently, a customer came in from Goodooga, 150km away. “He’d blown up the pump for his wife’s garden and needed a Davey PM250. We carry a lot of stock and a big range of spare parts so lucky for him we always have one available. He told us it was going to save his marriage!” Henry says. Henry describes the region as a ‘Davey area’ and says he has always been proud to represent the brand.
Henry and Tony both still work in the business, though Henry says he keeps threatening to retire. “It probably won’t happen though. I love what I do and it’s still rewarding to come to work.” The business now has four trade qualified electricians, including Henry’s son Brent who is back on the tools after a tough year marked by serious illness. “You wouldn’t believe the number of people who would ring, text or come in to ask how he was doing. When anyone went out on a job, it was the first thing the customers would ask about. That’s the good thing about a little community. This is just a beautiful place.” While the Polish name might suggest they are outsiders, Henry and Tony were born and raised in the area. “People actually know how to spell our name. It took me until second grade to learn it!” Henry jokes. “There’s a lot of history for us here. My old man was actually a driller for the water commission.
