About Us

The year was 2005 and David Gilmour, aged 24, was living a different life to the one he has today. Back then he was living in Cairns and playing footy but a phone call from his old boss of seven years asking if he would take over the business changed all that. David had always planned to return home, it was just eighteen months earlier than he planned, and turned out to be the best decision he ever made.

To be honest, David says he had a lot of self-doubt about taking over the business but now he says he would struggle to work for someone. The flexibility of owning his own business has meant he can help take his kids, Kaleb (13) and Macie (9), to school and when they were smaller he even described the shop as a bit of a “daddy day care”.  It’s now been 15 years since that phone call and taking over Numurkah Electric Motor and Pump Services which he owns with is wife, Melissa. “Back then it was a one man show and today not a lot has changed except Melissa now looks after the hard stuff, BAS and the accounts,” David says. The business deals in sales and repairs of pumps, electric motors and variable speed drives. “Years ago, the work was split pretty much 50/50 but today it’s more like 70 percent pumps and 30 percent motors. Customers remove their pumps and bring them into the workshop for us to repair. Breakdowns make up the lion’s share of the business.” Numurkah and the surrounding area use to be primarily dairy country but with the drought and ever-increasing water prices many have closed with farmers selling off land. David says almost 180 dairies around the area closed within a 12-to-18-month period. “Our customers now are mainly dairy (the ones that are still forging on), livestock, cropping and domestic clients from town as well as those in the new subdivisions that are popping up on the old dairy farming land.  We’ve also been lucky enough to retain maintenance work with some of the rented homes on the old dairy farms,” David says. 2020 posed many challenges, but David boasts he experienced his best 12 months to date over the entire 15 years he’s been in operation. “In the past farming has been tough, mainly due to the drought and we’ve always tried to get customers out of trouble with a repair, but the last 12 months has seen a huge turnaround with customers bringing in pumps for repair and grabbing a new one as a spare! The recent rains have helped to relieve a bit of financial stress for the farmers although it will take a few more good years of good rainfall for them to fully recover.” When asked why Davey, David doesn’t hesitate to explain “they were here when I bought the business and I wanted to make sure they would continue with me. The follow up service and handling of warranty issues, is so easy. Nothing is too much trouble; their reps are always happy to help out and really look after us.”

“Davey is a brand that everyone knows, my customers specifically ask for Davey and only Davey. They know it’s Australian and are happy to pay a bit extra for a quality Australian product.”
