For over 20 years there have been two Peters running PK Equipment in Sale, Victoria. Peter Padula, who started off as an apprentice light engine mechanic back in 1987 and Peter Phelps, son of the previous owners and whizz at all things mowers. Peter’s family had owned the business since 1978 and when his dad decided to retire, both Peter’s teamed up to take over the reins and haven’t looked back.
When they took over in 1995 there were only four staff, one handling the admin, another looking after the retail side and two out in the workshop. Today they have six staff and Peter Padula describes the premises as “busting at the seams.” “Last year was a hard time for a lot of businesses but ours has fared pretty well. People seem to have a bit more time on their hands and got around to doing the jobs they have been putting off,” says Peter. “Sales in sprinkler and domestic pumping needs has seen a big jump.” With the increase in home maintenance activity they have also signed up new credit customers as well as the usual walk in traffic. Although they are based in Sale their team travel as far as Seaspray on the coast, right up into the Victorian high country servicing customers who need a lot of high-end farm pumps, including sprinklers and stock pumping equipment. The need to move water from A to B on the popular five-acre domestic block has also contributed to the influx of business over the past few years. Peter describes their business as very diverse and prides himself on making what seems impossible, possible.
There is a long history between PK Equipment and Davey and Peter remembers well when all the pumps were blue and made from steel. Nowadays the pumps are yellow and Peter says this plays a big part in brand recognition. “People know we stock Davey and ask for it by name. We hardly have any issues with equipment considering the volume of Davey gear we sell,” says Peter. “Knowing there is always stock available is reassuring, and if for some reason it isn’t I know they will do their best to source it for us”.
