A true pioneer in the Australian pump industry Established in 1954, Slater Pumps is a locally owned and operated, multi-generational family business located in the heart of Melbourne. Managing Director and Chief Engineer Peter Slater, who has been "on the payroll" since he was a toddler, says pumps are in his DNA.
"H Slater & Son was originally formed as a partnership around 1954-56 with my grandfather, Henry, and my father, Burt, and became a Pty Ltd company with my grandmother and mother as a quartet in 1961," he explains. Peter recalls helping assemble and service pumps as a three-year-old when the business first operated at the back of the family property in Footscray. "I was happily remunerated with regular bottles of Coca Cola," he laughs. Peter worked part time during his school holidays to learn the craft and, after getting a Diploma and later a Degree in Mechanical Engineering, he joined the company full time in 1973. "I was privileged to work alongside and under the direction of my grandfather and father, who taught me the skills and imparted the knowledge that form the basis of my expertise today," he explains. With 70 years' experience, including as a Davey Master Dealer, Slater Pumps stands as a true pioneer in the Australian pump industry.
