About Us

For ex-surfie and business owner, Dean Hannaford, you could say water runs deep in his veins. After finishing school, he started work as an irrigation installer on the Central Coast of NSW, while his grandparents were pipelayers working in and around the region.

Fast forward many years after swapping the coast for the country, Dean is now the owner of Mudgee Pump Company, which he runs with his business partner Ben Westwood - and Dean says is just an extension of what he has been doing all his life. “I started the business 28 years ago on my own property selling pumps. We slowly started to grow, and then the opportunity came up five years ago to expand into a shopfront, which is when I bought Ben on board, and we haven’t looked back. Ben is born and bred in Mudgee, so his knowledge of the local area has been really helpful,” Dean says. “I’ve surfed with the highs and lows of running a business, I had 25 staff at one stage, but now we have only eight, which suits us and our projects just fine. I was travelling all over NSW at one point for work, and it just got too much, and too hard to keep up with, plus it was a lot of time away from home. So, we decided to scale back, and just focus on our local area and our core range of services.” Based in the beautiful wine region of Mudgee, the business does a lot of work with the local vineyards, supplying pumps, as well as water access across a lot of the farmland in the area.

“A lot of our work is centre pivot irrigation, but we also do custom designed pump systems, plus wastewater reuse and industrial planning. It’s a bit of a mix, but it keeps us busy!”

Dean says the Davey product is one of the most robust and toughest products he has ever worked with. “Other pumps are not as robust; they don’t stand up to the harsh Australian conditions, and it’s why we constantly choose to work with Davey on all our projects.” Dean is proud of the way his team builds customised solutions for customers, and welcomes support from the Davey team where needed. “We built a PTO driven pump station that is doing 50 litres and 850 KPA. Its uncommon for a station to do that kind of speed, but we built this system from scratch using Davey products, and our own technical knowledge. Dean says that he loves being a Davey Master Dealer. “Walk into our shop and you’ll only see Davey products, and that’s for a good reason.”
