If decent water pressure was as simple as turning the tap on further, we wouldn\u2019t be writing this article. If your home is experiencing low water pressure there are a few things you need to understand first so that you don\u2019t throw the baby out with the bathwater so to speak. We\u2019ll help you understand why you could be experiencing low water pressure so you can fix the problem without wasting time and money.<\/p>\n<\/div>

First up, pressure is the force that pushes water through the pipes. In New Zealand, if you\u2019re on mains water, you should have water pressure of at least 200 kPa and a flow rate (how much water comes out of the tap per minute) of at least 25 litres per minute.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

What is affecting my home\u2019s water pressure?<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>

Pump issues \u2013 do you have the right pump for the job?<\/strong>\u00a0One of the most common causes of inadequate water pressure is an under-spec\u2019d pump. The pump could be great (it could even be one of ours) but it may just not be up to the task at hand. We also find that as appliances and even tapware have changed over the years, if it\u2019s been a while since you\u2019ve upgraded your pump, it may no longer be up to the demands of these new appliances.<\/p>\n

Water Filters \u2013 when was the last time you changed your water filter? If you have filtration on your home water pressure system and it\u2019s been a while since you\u2019ve checked or changed your filters you may find they are clogged and are slowing the flow.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Showerhead and tapware:<\/strong> \u00a0Do you have a pressure or flow restrictor in your shower fittings? Is there a pressure limiting valve installed in your system? Is this fit for purpose?<\/p>\n

Pipe issues:<\/strong> We all know water travels from the source to the point of use through pipes. If your pipes are too small, or have built up limescale and rust over time, they could be clogged (especially if they are old galvanised pipes which tend to gather sediment and corrosion over time).<\/p>\n

Gravity and pump location:\u00a0<\/strong>Another thing to remember is the part gravity plays in transferring water from A to B. If you\u2019re up a steep driveway, or your home is situated a distance from your pump, it is potentially going to take more oomph to get the water to your faucet. Increasing your pipe or pump size could help.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
