“I started working in the store in 1994, and I learnt a lot about how it runs, serving customers and giving them the right advice or recommending the right product,” Michael says. After working there for seven years, the store came up for sale, so he took a brave step and made the leap to business owner. “It seemed like the logical choice to me, I knew a lot about the store, and I was in a good position to purchase it. Twenty years later I’m still here, and my wife Tammy works in the business with me now too.” Berri Irrigation & Plumbing’s customer are mainly farmers, working in either viticulture or horticulture, which plays to Michael’s horticulture background.  “We look after drip irrigation on vines, access to mains water, or domestic pumps for households and pools. I’d say 90% of the business services agriculture, and the other 10% looks after domestic irrigation,” Michael says. “We don’t go too far for a job though, as we’re a small town we work locally, and go as far as about 30kms. Once you go past that there are a lot of larger shops that we have to compete with.” For as long as Michael can remember, Berri Irrigation & Plumbing and Davey have been working together. “I’ve always liked the Davey product, so I was more than happy to keep working with them when I took over the business. They’re based in Australia, so working with an Aussie brand is something I really value as a small business owner.
