About Us

As a teenager fresh out of school in 1995, Andrew Powell never saw himself owning a pump shop, but after working in the industry for five years, it dawned on him that he could own his own shop, and do it better.

“Back then, if you got a job straight out of school, you were pretty lucky as they were highly sort after, so I just went with it when offered a retail traineeship at an irrigation business. I didn’t originally want to get into selling pumps, but I ended up really liking the job, and talking to the different customers,” Andrew says. Andrew purchased Bidgee Pumps & Irrigation in Wagga Wagga, a large regional town in NSW in 2001. He started out on his own, but now 20 years later, the business has grown to a staff of five. “We’ve been pretty lucky with the type of work we’ve had over the years, and the incredible support of our customers and the community. Being born and bred in Wagga, I know the area and the customer base well so that has definitely been a big help.” The business is evenly split between residential and commercial customers. “For our residential customers, the main seller is household water pressure systems, and for commercial customers we have a focus on irrigation systems for large farms, local schools and council work,” Andrew says. Andrew and his team have done some interesting projects over time, but one that particularly stands out is the visit to Australia back in 2018, by Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall for the Commonwealth Games. They were staying at local property in Gundagai and before they arrived Andrew’s team installed a Davey Microlene filter at the property.

“You could say the water was ‘fit for a king,” Andrew says.

When Andrew started the business in 2001, he knew he wanted to sell Davey products, due to their popularity and the strength of the brand in the industry. “We started off selling just the smaller products; pool pumps, water filters, and then moved into larger water treatment and household pressure systems. They’re an Australian owned business with great back up service and support, which is how we see ourselves too,” Andrew says. Bidgee Pumps & Irrigation also makes sure they play their part in giving back to the local Wagga Wagga community. “We do a lot of sponsorships of the local golf and turf clubs, plus we sponsor one of the disability corporations in the region too.”
