About Us

Ben Johnson had always hoped to one day run a small business. It wasn’t until buying a farm and relocating to the Adelaide Hills in 2017 that he, his wife Ellie and parents Ian and Kerry started laying the groundwork for their new business venture.

As a fourth-generation qualified plumber, Ben had spent much of his career in outback Queensland, running the piping crew in one of the country’s largest mines. Ben, Ellie and their kids had been in South Australia for about a year when Kerry and Ian identified that the local pump shop, Irrigation Pumps N More (IPNM) was up for sale. The shop was struggling, and they saw a great opportunity to take it over and bring it back to life. “We were looking at a range of business opportunities and discussing what would be the best fit. When we saw this business pop up for sale, we knew we could really make a go of it. Mum and Dad had previously run a number of successful businesses and I couldn’t wait to learn from them,” Ben says. “When we first took over the shop, there was just a couple of staff. Now we’ve grown to a team of 10 and the business is really thriving. We’re currently on the lookout for more help! “I run the day to day of the business, Mum looks after finance, and Ellie looks after operations and marketing. Dad works independently but is always on hand to mentor and provide advice. It’s a good mix of strengths and we make a great team.” The well-stocked shop has a loyal following and services a broad range of customers. The staff have decades of experience and can provide technical advice on pumps, plumbing and irrigation. Every member of the IPNM team can be found serving customers on the shop floor, as Ben believes great customer service is the backbone of their business. “Mainly we’re dealing with farmers, landscapers, households and plumbers. Mount Barker is one of the fastest growing areas in the state, so we sell our fair share of Davey products to new homes too. Our crew of tradesmen also do a lot of industrial and agricultural work on the ground, and we always look for opportunities to expand and ‘weatherproof’ the business. We like to focus on more than just selling our customers a product, but a whole solution, including support from our team for repairs, installations and troubleshooting. “As the biggest pump and irrigation shop in the area, we’re also a big part of the community. We sponsor the local footy and cricket clubs, along with little athletics, and do pretty much anything we can to help out. We have a wonderful customer base and we consider them all friends,” Ben says. Davey has been supplying products and supporting Ben and his family in the shop since the beginning, and he says they showed a lot of faith in them as they turned the struggling shop around to it what it is today.

“We’ve had a lot of good guidance from the Davey team, and they helped us get up and running with understanding the product range and selling to customers."

Now, they use our shop and customers for their R&D, whether that’s asking our customers what improvements they want, or what new products they’d like to see. There is a real sense of teamwork between us and Davey, and we have a really strong commitment to each other,” Ben says.
