Smart Water was established over 35 years ago, and over that time they have seen a big shift in the community’s approach to water. People are looking to use the least amount of water possible yet still expect to achieve the best outcomes. It used to be that potable water was the first and only option considered, but now Smart Water focus on other primary alternatives including rainwater, groundwater, and recycled water, and only supplementing those water sources with potable water where necessary. From this, a whole new Smart Water strategy evolved - Use less, substitute, and recycle.

Smart Water customers are often landscape architects, town planners, and developers, as well as contractors and homeowners. Many years ago, people typically had larger house blocks and there was a focus on making your private space lush and green. Now, block sizes are smaller, and dwellings take up a larger portion, so extensive private irrigation has decreased. At the same time, public space has increased. Traffic in public spaces is many times greater so inputs need to be much more intensive and water-efficient irrigation is much more important. Today the business is split into three divisions, with two stores across Melbourne, design, service, installation, and maintenance arms. Smart Water started selling Davey because it’s an iconic brand and has kept selling it because they have an extensive product offering and provide fantastic service. It’s amazing to see how Davey has been able to keep up as the market has become more competitive and they have been able to respond to local needs. Rainbank was a world leader when it came out, for example.
