How to be the envy of your neighbourhood with rainwater harvesting
Don’t let water restrictions stop you using the garden hose this summer! Find out how the Davey RainBank can help keep your garden green and your car clean.
There is no doubt our climate is changing and with water restrictions starting to creep up the country and the effects of El Niño beginning to impact us, it’s time to take control of your water supply and future proof yourself with a rainwater harvesting system.
Rainwater harvesting isn’t just something for rural properties or lifestyle blocks. More and more people living in urban regions of New Zealand are cottoning on to the benefits of having their own water source independent of municipal supply and the ability to tap into extra water when and where they need it – especially when restrictions kick in.
What can you use rainwater for?
- Watering the garden and washing the car
- Filling the swimming or spa pool
- Grey water applications within your house such as the toilet and laundry
- Drinking water and whole house use*
*We always recommend three-stage UV filtration be included in your rainwater harvesting system for drinking and whole house use.
How does rainwater harvesting work?
Rainwater is collected from the roof of your house into your gutter and makes its way through the down pipe, before passing through a simple filter and into a water tank which is either located above or below ground.
Your tank will need to be plumbed in to your existing pipework and configured depending on what you want to use the rainwater for. A submersible pump and controller setup like the Davey RainBank EVO2 will pump water to the outlet, prioritising rainwater, while seamlessly switching over to mains use in the event of low tank water or during electrical outages.
If you’re using rain water for drinking and whole of house use, then three-stage UV filtration can be added to the system.
