How to remove bacteria and viruses from your drinking water

Don’t leave the quality of your drinking water in someone else’s hands. Whether you’re on tank water or mains, find out how to protect your family with Davey’s effective water treatment solutions.

Is there bacteria and viruses in mains water?

According to the Ministry of Health, between 2010 – 2021 approximately three-quarters of New Zealanders on registered supplies received safe drinking-water that met all three standards for compliance. That means one quarter of all households on municipal supply didn’t meet these standards. Source

Each council and municipal supply gets its water from different sources and has a slightly different approach to treating it to ensure it is safe and potable. However, on its journey from the source to your tap, water can become contaminated by substances like aluminium, lead, asbestos, pesticides, sulphur, sediment, and rust.

The Havelock North water contamination crisis in 2016, where around 5,500 residents became ill, 45 were hospitalised and four died from campylobacteriosis, was the result of sheep faeces making their way into the mains water supply, most likely after heavy rain. Source

What are the common bacteria and bugs in tank water?

If you’re on tank water it is not uncommon for your water to contain sediment, rust and bird poo which make the perfect breeding ground for bacteria, parasitic cysts, viruses and other harmful micro-organisms.

Bacteria like eColi and salmonella, algae, fungi, and cysts like cryptosporidium or giardia are some of the most common bugs found in tank water.

Whether you’re on tank water or mains supply, Davey has a range of water filtration solutions to ensure your water is free from contaminants and harmful bacteria and cysts.

3-Stage UV disinfection

This is the gold standard when it comes to treating water for drinking – ensuring it is clean, safe and free from nasty tastes or odours. Water from your mains tap or tank, passes through three different filters – each performing a different role.

  1. Coarse filtration – a poly-pleated filter removes the bulk of solids like sediment, rust and silt
  2. Fine filtration – a poly-spun filter traps smaller particles (down to 1 micron) such as giardia and cryptosporidium cysts
  3. UV disinfection – ultraviolet light inactivates bacterial and viral contaminants, effectively and safely without the use of chemicals
