Tank Water Safety
When was the last time you tested the waters?
Whether being off the grid is a lifestyle choice or just life, if you’re collecting and relying on rainwater as your main source of drinking water there are a few things you should know to keep your tank in tip top shape.
We are big fans of rainwater harvesting – it makes good use of natural resources, can save you money and is a great way to take the quality of your household water into your own hands.
However, as water is collected from rooflines and fed into rainwater tanks, sediment, rust, bird poo, animal faecal matter can flow into the tank with it – this is where the bacteria, parasitic cysts, viruses and harmful micro-organisms begin to replicate.
So, how do you ensure your tank water is safe?
- Start with installing a good quality screen on the tank inlet to reduce debris entering the tank
- Treat your tank water using Microlene Acquasafe Liquid Disinfection
- Test your tank water regularly using Microlene Acquasafe Test Strips
- Consider a whole of house water pumping, filtration and UV disinfection system such as the Microlene Acquashield Max
- Keep gutters clear and the roof clean
How does Microlene Acquasafe Liquid Disinfection work?
Containing a combination of hydrogen peroxide and silver it uses an oxidation process that mimics nature to destroy bacteria and viruses. While having that go on in your water might sound a bit scary, Microlene Acquasafe is non-toxic and breaks down into oxygen and water. There is no taste, odour or by-products, it’s environmentally safe, and when used with the correct concentration, is safe to drink.
The best part is that the application couldn’t be simpler – it’s a one-step process and lasts up to two months. We always recommend you test your tank water 24-hours after dosing it, after significant rainfall or storms and regularly to ensure continuous safety.
Microlene Acquasafe can also be used to disinfect the housing plumbing lines when you’re installing a 3-stage UV system such as the Microlene Aquashield Centurion. It can also be used to destroy Biofilm – the slimy walls which form on the inside of your pipes which is a breeding ground for bacteria and viruses and is tricky to remove.
