November 8th, 2019 is a date that Julie Hockey and her family will never forget. The Kian Road Fire, which burned west of Macksville in northern NSW, destroyed their 100-acre farm and wholesale plant nursery.
The Spirit of the Rainforest Nursery had 30,000 native plants in five fully irrigated igloos, as well as a Davidson Plum orchard with over 300, 20-year-old plum trees.
The one piece of good news for the Hockeys’ was that their family home was saved, thanks to a firefighting pump that enabled them to use the water from their pool to fight the fire. Their extensive sprinkler system which waters the garden surrounding their home was also activated and ran for hours, helping to keep the blaze at bay.
But the nursery could not be saved and all of the Hockeys’ nursery irrigation systems, pumps, swimming pool pumps and filters were also destroyed.
Plans for a new nursery are currently underway and the hunt has begun for the seeds of Davidson Plums and rainforest trees
“We’ll start to rebuild and replant on another part of the property, but there is a lot of work ahead to get to where we were,” Nick says.
Davey has donated a Remote Start Firefighter and an SJ60-08PC to help the Hockeys transfer water to their irrigation systems when their igloos are re-established. Nick couldn’t wipe the smile off his face when he received the Remote Start Firefighter- he described it as “Davey pump happiness”. “..wow, you should have seen the look on Nick’s face thankyou from the bottom of our hearts Dora and Davey” said Julie Hockey.
