Why winterising your pool is the smart choice

While other people’s pools are turning green, they’ll be turning green with envy when they see your sparkling clean pool this winter. Find out how winterising your pool with AquaPure is not only efficient and cost effective, but the smart way to maintain healthy, hygienic and clear water all year-round.

What is winterising your pool?

Winterising your pool means that instead of turning off your pool equipment during the cooler months (May to October) and allowing your pool to turn green, you keep it running at a reduced capacity. By continuing to maintain the pool chemistry, you can effectively protect your pool and prevent algae growth. Our AquaPure Winterising Kit offers three simple and effective products to help with this process.

If your pool equipment is fitted correctly to your pool size, it will take around four hours to turn all the water over in the pool. In summer this needs to happen twice a day, but in winter it only needs to happen once a day.

The benefits of winterising your pool

Just like a car, your pool equipment needs to be running regularly to keep it operating at its best. Along with sparkly, clean water, here are some of the benefits of winterising your pool.

  • Healthy pool water that doesn’t smell or look like a pond

  • Reduce the risk of damage to your pool equipment by leaving it sitting idle

  • Increase the longevity of your pump by keeping it running and maintained

  • Less cost and effort to get your pool from green to swimmable in Spring

The AquaPure Winterising Kit includes…

1. AquaPure Maintenance Algaecide

An extra-strength algaecide especially formulated to kill and control resistant strains of algae. Compatible with chlorine, it has a negligible effect on pH, total alkalinity, and hardness. It remains effective for three months.

2. AquaPure Phosphate Remover

Removes high and low levels of phosphates and instantly clarifies leaving pool water crystal clear.

3. AquaPure Scale Remover & Metals Inhibitor

Stops scale buildup and metal staining. It protects salt chlorinator cells from calcium buildup and keeps metals like iron and copper from causing discoloration.

How to winterise your pool?

  • 1

Brush pool and perform either a two-minute backwash and then a one-minute rinse on your media filter (or run backwash/rinse until your sight glass is clear), or a deep clean on your cartridge filter. Empty skimmer and pool pump baskets.

  • 2

Add 100ml of AquaPure Maintenance Algaecide per 10,000L of water directly into the pool.

  • 3

After four hours, add 100ml of AquaPure Phosphate Remover per 10,000L of water directly into the pool. Keep pool operating for at least four hours after application. Note: Pool water may become cloudy after application. This is ok.

  • 4

Three days later, perform another backwash and rinse or cartridge clean.

  • 5

Add 100ml of AquaPure Scale Remover & Metals Inhibitor per 10,000L of water directly into the pool. Keep pool operating for at least four hours after application.

Keep your water chemistry maintained this winter

Water Testing

  • This should be done monthly for salt/mineral chlorinated pools and fortnightly for pools that are manually dosed with chlorine. Always have pool water tested after heavy use, heavy rainfall, and extreme weather events.

Chemical Levels

  • Ensure chlorine levels are at a minimum of 1.5ppm.
  • pH levels must be between 7.2-7.6.

Filtration & Maintenance

  • Your pool needs to operate for a minimum of eight hours each day in summer, and a minimum of four to six hours in winter.
  • Backwash and rinse or cartridge clean procedure as required by inspecting your pressure gauge to ensure quality filtration.
  • Empty debris from skimmer and pool pump baskets regularly and perform manual cleaning on your pool as needed.
